Boomtown 1910

Boomtown StreetTransport yourself back to a time when the clip clop of horses filled the air...

Saskatchewan boomed with economic activity from the turn of the century to 1914. 1910 Boomtown captures the atmosphere and style of this bustling period. Over 30 buildings portray community life - from the general store overflowing with everything from nails to gingham, to the blacksmith shop ringing with the sound of the hammer striking the anvil.

Dress in period clothing and take home a special souvenir from Boomtown Photo Studio.
Currently operating Noon - 5:00 pm on weekends. Call first to ensure photographer is available.

Cancer Bomb Exhibit

The original Cobalt-60 Beam Therapy Unit, also known as the cobalt bomb, will be on permanent display at the Saskatoon Western Development Museum (WDM), starting in the fall of 2011. November 2011 is the 60th anniversary of the first treatment with the cobalt bomb.

The WDM considers the cobalt bomb to be one of the most important artifacts in its collection. This machine, and others like it, has saved the lives of millions of cancer patients around the world. This is very much a Saskatchewan - and a Saskatoon - story.

The public is encouraged to visit the Saskatoon WDM on December 4, 2011 at 1:00 pm for our Official Exhibit Opening to learn more about this innovative Saskatchewan story. Following the formal opening ceremony, the WDM has organized, in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan, a Panel Discussion with experts from the field of nuclear medicine on the legacy of the cobalt bomb.

Blacksmith Shop
Outdoor Blacksmith Shop
Open during certain seasonal events, this functioning Blacksmith Shop is a companion to the indoor shop along Boomtown Street. See the red hot fire in the forges, feel their heat, and smell the burning coal as our volunteer blacksmiths hammer away at their latest projects.

Clay Oven
Clay Oven under wooden pole shedIn 2005 the Saskatoon WDM undertook the task of building a clay oven. It was made in the same style as was used by early settlers. The oven is used during the Museum’s annual event, Pion-Era, to demonstrate how bread was baked in the days before electricity and other modern conveniences. Approximately 180 loaves of bread were sold at Pion-Era 2009.  All money raised goes towards the up-keep of the oven and WDM programs. (more)
