of this bustling period. Over 30 buildings portray community
life - from the general store overflowing with everything from
nails to gingham, to the blacksmith shop ringing with the sound
of the hammer striking the anvil.

Dress in period clothing and take home a special souvenir from
Boomtown Photo Studio.

Cancer
Bomb Exhibit
The original Cobalt-60 Beam Therapy Unit,
also known as the cobalt bomb, will be on permanent display at
the Saskatoon Western Development Museum (WDM), starting in the
fall of 2011. November 2011 is the 60th anniversary of the first
treatment with the cobalt bomb.
The WDM considers the cobalt bomb to be one of the most
important artifacts in its collection. This machine, and others
like it, has saved the lives of millions of cancer patients
around the world. This is very much a Saskatchewan - and a
Saskatoon - story.
The public is encouraged to visit the Saskatoon WDM on December
4, 2011 at 1:00 pm for our Official Exhibit
Opening to learn more about this innovative Saskatchewan
story. Following the formal opening ceremony, the WDM has
organized, in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan, a
Panel Discussion with experts from the field of nuclear
medicine on the legacy of the cobalt bomb.

P. Lewchuk came with his family from Ukraine to Saskatchewan

stage for the first time, holding his audience spellbound with
displays of illusion, fire-eating, lock-and-chain escapes,
pantomime, and juggling.
The Lewchuk exhibit will be on display in Saskatoon for a year,
after which it will travel to the Yorkton, Moose Jaw and North
Battleford Western Development Museum locations.

Outdoor Areas
Our outdoor areas include Boomtown Park
and a handful of Boomtown era buildings. Come out during certain
Special
Events to see these buildings in action.
Boomtown Park

Nestled in beside the Museum, this well-shaded area is a great
place for a picnic lunch on a warm Saskatchewan afternoon.
Picnic tables and garbage bins are provided.
Blacksmith Shop

Open during certain seasonal events, this functioning Blacksmith
Shop is a companion to the indoor shop along Boomtown Street.
See the red hot fire in the forges, feel their heat, and smell
the burning coal as our volunteer blacksmiths hammer away at
their latest projects.
Clay Oven
In
2005 the Saskatoon WDM
undertook the task of building a clay oven. It was made in the same style as was used by early
settlers. The oven
is used during the Museum’s annual event, Pion-Era, to
demonstrate how bread was baked in the days before electricity
and other modern conveniences.
Approximately 180 loaves of bread were sold at Pion-Era 2009.
All money raised goes towards the up-keep of the oven and
WDM programs. (more)
