Celebrating Saskatchewan's Heritage Website & Timeline
Saskatoon Public Schools and the Western Development
Museum (WDM) have joined forces to create a web-based resource that will
assist teachers and students in learning more about Saskatchewan's history in
2005 and beyond.
Celebrating Saskatchewan’s Heritage endeavors to present provincial milestones, benchmarks, personal stories and
achievements to celebrate the indomitable spirit of Saskatchewan’s people. The
site was designed to bridge the gap between access to the extraordinary
resources held at the WDM and use of these resources in the classrooms by
Saskatchewan educators.
The Celebrating Saskatchewan’s Heritage Website was designed to facilitate a better understanding of Canadian regional heritage through access to over 600 archival images, 10 educational movies on various Saskatchewan themes (families, communities, schooling, recreation, immigration, pioneer housing and so forth), audio clips from pioneers who have stories to share, over 40 documents for additional background information on various Saskatchewan topics, lesson plans for teachers, online learning activities for students, and comprehensive lists of additional websites on the people and events that have shaped Saskatchewan’s development. The multi-media items (photos, movies, and audio clips) present life as it was and make evident the many challenges faced by Saskatchewan’s people over the past 100 years.
Dynamic classroom resources have been created to engage
students in learning about Saskatchewan’s heritage through the use primary
documents and images. This website provides educationally sound resources
required to integrate these resources into classrooms throughout the province,
leaving students and teachers alike with a new respect for our heritage and
accomplishments.
Wherever possible, we have used the authentic voices of many perspectives such as: reflections from homesteader’s journal, Aboriginal and Métis perspectives, original research, and so forth. It was our goal to present the multi-faceted evolution of our province by creating learning activities that encourage our students feel personally connected to a meaningful "slice" of history.
The site was developed to coincide with Saskatchewan’s Centenary and four new exhibits at the WDM locations in Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, and North Battleford. The learning opportunities offered within the site are tied to Saskatchewan Learning objectives to assist with the actualization of Saskatchewan curriculum.
Additional contributors to the site include Meewasin Valley Interpretive Centre, Tourism Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Archives Board, National Archives of Canada, Gabriel Dumont Institute, Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Centre, Saskatoon Public Library – Local History Room, Digital Saskatchewan, and Connie Kaldor.

HOW DO I USE THESE ONLINE RESOURCES?
To support classroom activities/learning
This site contains teacher lesson plans (tied to SK Curriculum) and printable resources and online activities for students. The best part? The resources are ready to go and free to use!!
Consider using a digital projector to watch the movies with the entire class.
Use your one computer in your classroom as one centre in a centre-based study of Saskatchewan. Students can watch movies, do online activities, complete assignments and research while at this centre.
Interactive online learning activities are a great way to use that one computer or pod of computers in the classroom.
These activities are also suitable for the mini or full computer lab, too.
Online resources can be used to supplement current curriculum and also to provide enrichment or modification. You will find that they use a variety of instructional strategies and appeal to a variety of learning styles and needs.
To support students with their homework or learning beyond the classroom
Send home the URL (http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/DE/saskatchewan100/index.html)connected to your classroom topics in your newsletters or list them on your classroom websites. Parents and students can explore the site from home. Consider assigning these online resources for additional practice or as an enrichment activity. (Note: Movies will not play on MAC computers.)
To support professional development
There are many documents in the Background Information section of the website that can assist you in extending your own knowledge of various aspects of Saskatchewan’s history. We encourage you use these resources in any way you can to teach or learn about Saskatchewan.
