Fudge Snowplane

Red Fudge snowplane

Built by Robert Fudge of Moosomin, Saskatchewan. Fudge began commercial production of his “snow sedans” in 1932, three years after building his first snowplane. Snowplanes were popular before all-weather roads were common throughout southern Saskatchewan. Fudge’s snowplane is on exhibit at the Moose Jaw WDM.

Steam Locomotive

Locomotive on track in front of Saskatchewan Pool Elevator

Built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1913 for the Canadian Northern Railway. The locomotive was used in several prairie subdivisions, then as a switching engine in British Columbia. It was last used in 1960. The locomotive is on exhibit in the outdoor village at the North Battleford WDM.

Wheat Straw Hat

Made by Nicholas Gerla who homesteaded near Theodore, Saskatchewan in 1901. Wheat stalks were soaked to make them pliable, then braided. The braids were stitched together to make the hat. The hat is part of a straw weaving exhibit at the Saskatoon WDM.

Rumely OilPull 16-30 HP tractor

Rumely Oil Pull 16-30 HP tractor

Introduced in 1919 and manufactured until 1924. The Rumely OilPull was a popular tractor in its day. It was restored to running condition in 2011/ 2012 and can be seen at the Yorkton WDM.

Artificial Leg

Made by blacksmith John Marcus of Surbiton, Saskatchewan who had his leg amputated following a broken hip. The prosthesis is made from a two by four, hinged at the knee, with a section of rubber tire to cradle his stump. It is on exhibit at the Moose Jaw WDM.

School Van

Horse drawn van pulled by two horses. Caption reads: Conquest S. D. No 3139

Enclosed horsedrawn van used to take children to school in the Conquest, Saskatchewan district. The van is on exhibit at the Saskatoon WDM.

Patent Model

Model of a sheaf-carrying attachment for a binder. Saskatchewan inventor Paul Gerlach had the model built as part of the patent process. He was granted the patent in 1921. Gerlach had won the sweepstakes prize for the best bushel of hard spring wheat at the 8th Dryland Farming Congress at Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1913. The model is in storage at the WDM Curatorial Centre.

Pumper

Hand-operated pumper purchased in the early 20th century by the village of Pennant, Saskatchewan for fighting fires. It is on exhibit in the Fire Hall on Boomtown Street at the Saskatoon WDM.

Shelf Clock

black upright shelf clock

Clock made in Waterbury, Connecticut. It was sold to the McShane family of Nova Scotia in 1892 and brought to Senate, Saskatchewan in 1910. The clock is on exhibit in the Clock Shop on Boomtown Street at the Saskatoon WDM.

Edison Phonograph

Edison Phonograph

Crank-operated phonograph for use with cylinder records. The phonograph is on exhibit in the General Store on Boomtown Street in the Saskatoon WDM.

1949 Chrysler Windsor

Blue 1949 Chrysler Windsor

Four-door sedan. The car is in the Classy Cars exhibit at the Moose Jaw WDM.

Rumely Tractor

Rumely Lightweight Type M, 20-35 HP tractor. It was purchased new in Regina in 1928 and used until 1951 in the Lang, Saskatchewan district. The tractor is on exhibit at the North Battleford WDM.

Hovland Thresher

Hovland self-propelled travelling thresher patented in 1908 by August Hovland and built in 1910 in South Dakota. The travelling thresher was the inspiration for the development of the swather by the Hanson brothers of Lajord, Saskatchewan in the 1920s. The thresher is in storage at the Saskatoon WDM.

Hot Water Bottle

Made of stoneware and filled with hot water. Hot water bottles like this were sometimes called “pigs.” It is on exhibit in the telephone operator’s house on Boomtown Street, Saskatoon WDM.

Pump Organ

Made by W. Doherty and Company in Clinton, Ontario. The firm began as a furniture retailer and by about 1905 was building pianos and organs. The organ is on exhibit at the Yorkton WDM.

Railway Inspector’s Car

1934 Buick adapted to run on rails

1934 Buick adapted to run on rails. The conversion was done in 1936 at the Canadian Pacific Railway shop in Winnipeg for use by the CPR superintendent, Saskatchewan division, who worked out of Moose Jaw. The car is on exhibit in the Rail Gallery at the Moose Jaw WDM.

Sewing Basket

Made of dyed wheat straw by a young Saskatchewan woman and entered in a homemaker’s competition, probably at an agricultural fair. The basket is on exhibit along with other straw pieces at the Saskatoon WDM.

Telephone Switchboard

Telephone switchboard

Used by the Birsay Rural Telephone Company. All calls made by subscribers were handled by the local operator. The switchboard is on exhibit in the Post Office/Telephone building in the North Battleford WDM village.

Coffee Mill

red coffee grinder

Manufactured in New York state before 1920. Large mills like this were used in general stores to grind coffee for customers. The mill is on exhibit in the General Store on Boomtown Street, Saskatoon WDM.
