Straw Gas Car
Behind-the-Scenes

Using a McLaughlin E35 car from the Museum’s collection and a representation of the original gas bag, the WDM will tell the story of the University’s experimental straw gas car this fall at the Saskatoon Western Development Museum.

Here’s how we did it.

Building the cylinder that will make up the body of the balloon.

Measuring and cutting the Styrofoam.

Carefully shaping the ends of the balloon.

Removing the car seat so that it can be recovered.

Fitting the running boards and fenders.

Installing new tires.

Taping the "seams".

Hoisting the balloon above the car.

Attaching the guy wires.

Finished!
